Dented and stained

By Bruce Wadd

I love my kitchen table.  It’s had many a party, lots of meals, plenty of laughter.  Conversations have flowed freely over its stained and dented exterior, but its solid timber, purchased intentionally for the purpose of eating together.

It will never have a plastic cover over it like my mother’s table, but it will always be clean and hygienic.  It will never be totally shiny and pristine like my best friend’s rarely used dining room suite, except for those ‘special’ guests.

No, our table will always have a few marks, because we have people that drop stuff, spill food, scratch watches, poke knives … and many other unfortunate things.

But it’s the marks, more than anything, that speak loudly to me through memories.  They tell of friends and family and food, of laughter and games and plenty of fun.

I wonder what Jesus’ feast table will be like – the one you and I, and your next door neighbour are invited to!

“Look! I have been standing at the door

and I am constantly knocking.  If anyone hears Me

calling him and opens the door, I will come in

and fellowship with him and he with Me.”

Revelation 3:20

Let’s party!
