MIDI files are handy if you want to give people a feel for what your song is meant to sound like, especially if you don't have the facilities to put together a slick MP3 recording. 

A simple backing track can be generated quickly and simply using Band in a Box.  You can then record the melody over this to give yourself a reasonable MIDI file.  

A MIDI file, digital recording or sheet music will be required with any submission so that potential users of your song can get an idea of what you intend the song to sound like.
