Give me my dessert!

 by Bruce Wadd

I was raised during an era and in a family where dessert was on the menu every night.  Thus as an adult I love finishing off a main meal with something sweet.  It is an acquired taste, which as yet I haven’t been able to get rid of.

“Have you had enough?” asks my serving wife.  “What else would you like?”  And with a knowing smile I look back at her and request some dessert to complete the meal.

If she refuses, I get a little more definite, and respond with, “Give me my dessert!”  It makes for an interesting power struggle!

DO I REALLY NEED THE DESSERT? NO, BUT I WANT IT!

On a spiritual level, a similar struggle occurs.  You know that sin is not good for you, but your flesh craves it.  In fact, it regularly tries to convince you that you can’t survive without being satisfied.

You face a battle.  God will give you clear direction, and if you choose to follow it He will empower you to resist temptation.  If you don’t resist, your weakness increases!

“So dear brothers, you have no obligation whatever to your old sinful nature to do what it begs you to do.

For if you keep on following it you are lost and will perish,

but if through the power of the Holy Spirit

you crush it and its evil deeds, you shall live.”

Romans 8:12,13

TODAY, resist the ‘dessert’ craving… and the Holy Spirit will empower you!
