Living outside

by Bruce Wadd

As a child my family had the privilege of living in an old “Queenslander”, a home known for its liveability and coolness.  With plenty of room, bed space wasn’t difficult to find.  Occasionally my brother and I would sleep on the verandahs, particularly on hot summer’s evenings.

But as I headed into teenage years sleeping inside became way too stuffy and restricted.  So sleeping on the verandah grew into a nightly event.  Being able to have a fresh cool breeze blowing over me on a sweltering summer’s night was an exquisite pleasure reserved for those willing to be ‘outside’.  Having the opportunity to lie in bed and still see the great view became an absolute joy!

But the ultimate pleasure came in wintertime when a cold wind was howling through the cracks in the floorboard, and louvered windows, yet I was snuggled up under thick blankets with just my face exposed.  What exquisite freedom!

This childhood pleasure pales to insignificance compared to the delights God has ready to give.  Here’s one to consider…

“You have been bought and paid for by Christ,

so you belong to him –

be free now from all these earthly prides and fears.”

1 Corinthians 7:23

Today, live outside this world, accept God and be truly free!
