15 to 20 degrees off

by Bruce Wadd

“Why is it that we are so far off course”? I asked the captain. The reply showed how naïve I was about the sailing, and how wise the yachtsman really was.

“There are many different factors”, came the reply, “wind being the main one. But it is also the current caused by the tide run which causes the 'slippage' or leeway.”

Fascinated by the wisdom, with mouth and mind open, I listened more intently to the complexities of what I thought was a simple exercise of sailing from point A to B.

“To stay on course you must take reference from 'fixed' or immoveable objects!  Sometimes you have to point the boat 15 or 20 degrees 'off course' to compensate.  There is a degree of 'trust' for the novice in making that choice, as it seems to be the incorrect thing to do, but you can always trust the immoveable!” said the experienced sailor.

Wow, what words of wisdom!

How many times has God asked you to go ‘off course’? It’s only in hindsight that you realize that He was compensating for life’s ebbs and flows!

“Like an athlete I punish my body, treating it roughly, training it to do what it should, not what it wants to. Otherwise I fear that after enlisting others for the race,

I myself might be declared unfit

and ordered to stand aside.”

1 Corinthians 9:27

TODAY, follow His directions, even if they might be ‘off’!
